Feeling Burned Out? Here’s What to Do

Feeling drained, stressed, and just plain blah? You might be experiencing burnout. It’s a common problem, especially in today’s fast-paced world. While tech advancements have made us more connected, more aware, more able to find information, the truth is, we’re not built for that, and it’s important to acknowledge and step back from the feelings that come with our tech – from always having to answer immediately, to doom scrolling.  Burnout is often linked to both, and is a horrible feeling – often, it’s when people meet breaking point at the worst time for them, and it can be catastrophic for their plans.  Here’s how to recognize it and what to do about it.

Signs of Burnout

  • Feeling drained: You’re constantly tired, even after a good night’s sleep.
  • Negative attitude: You’re cynical, irritable, and just don’t care anymore.
  • Brain fog: You’re having trouble concentrating and making decisions.
  • Physical symptoms: Headaches, stomach-aches, and trouble sleeping.

What to Do

Often when people are on the verge of or have hit their limit, it can seem hopeless.  Going back to basics always helps.  Self-care is the foundation of exploring your options – with a pattern of good sleep, meditation, eating as well as you can and light exercise, you’ll find your mind is clearer, and that you can see what is next, for you.

Prioritize Self-Care:

  • Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
  • Eat well: Fuel your body with nutritious foods.
  • Move your body: Exercise regularly, even if it’s just a short walk.
  • Mindfulness: Practice meditation or yoga to calm your mind. Not sure how?  Our Elemental Need quiz provides a book of information on how to start, while our membership provides various other options.

Set Boundaries:

  • Work-life balance: Learn to separate work from personal time.
  • Say no: Don’t overcommit yourself. This can often be hard, but is critical to get your life back on track.  Overloading yourself will just put you back at the beginning.
  • Time management: Use tools like calendars and to-do lists to stay organized. We’ll be sharing our recommended tools over the last few weeks in November.

Seek Support:

  • Talk it out: Share your feelings with friends, family, or a therapist.
  • Join a support group: Connect with others who understand.
  • Professional help: Consider therapy or counselling.

Reassess Your Life:

  • Career: Is your job fulfilling? Are you on the right path?
  • Relationships: Are your relationships healthy and supportive?
  • Hobbies: Are you making time for things you enjoy?

Take a Break:

  • Vacation: Plan a trip or a staycation.
  • Disconnect: Limit screen time and social media.

Remember, burnout is a serious issue, but it’s not hopeless. By taking steps to prioritize your well-being, you can overcome burnout and regain your energy and enthusiasm.
